Certain positions within Southern are classified as safety critical. Roles that fall in this category are all associated with the movement of trains, and for safety reasons are subject to certain medical requirements. If you are not certain that you will meet the standards shown below you should check prior to starting the recruitment process.
Some management roles may also be deemed as safety critical, and this will be indicated on the role profiles when advertised.
Some medical requirements for safety critical roles are quite technical; however, your GP or optician should be able to provide you with an explanation of the terms below. Applicants who have had an epileptic fit since the age of five years would not be suitable for mainline train driving.
Insulin-dependent diabetics would not be suitable for train driving.
In order to be able to safely use the controls within the driving cab the following requirements are necessary:
The maximum height for a Southern Driver is 6 feet 4 inches and the minimum height is 5 feet 2 inches.
