Requirements For A Safety Critical Role

Certain positions within Southern are classified as safety critical. Roles that fall in this category are all associated with the movement of trains, and for safety reasons are subject to certain medical requirements. If you are not certain that you will meet the standards shown below you should check prior to starting the recruitment process.

Some management roles may also be deemed as safety critical, and this will be indicated on the role profiles when advertised.

Specific Medical Restrictions

Some medical requirements for safety critical roles are quite technical; however, your GP or optician should be able to provide you with an explanation of the terms below. Alternatively if you require further information you can contact our Occupational Health Department on to raise your health concerns; for clarification of Southern policies please email the Operational Standards team -

Vision Requirements For All Safety Critical Roles

  • Distance vision of at least 6/6 binocular vision, with a minimum of 6/12 in the worst eye.
  • Near vision to reach N8, for drivers only with glasses or contact lenses if worn
  • If contact lenses are worn applicants need to be tested without the lenses at medical
  • Tinted or photochromic lenses are not permitted
  • Applicants who have previously undergone laser eye surgery will be subject to additional investigations before fitness can be confirmed
  • Bifocal/Varifocal spectacles are permitted
  • Varifocal contact lenses are not permitted

Colour Vision For All Safety Critical Roles

  • Must have normal colour vision (using the Ishihara Plates Test).

Hearing Requirements For All Safety Critical Roles

  • Hearing loss must not exceed 40dB over frequencies 0.5, 1 kHz and 45 at 2 kHz.
  • No conditions likely to cause unpredictable fluctuations in hearing should be present.

Additional Requirements For Train Drivers

Applicants who have had an epileptic fit since the age of five years would not be suitable for mainline train driving.

Insulin-dependent diabetics would not be suitable for train driving.

In order to be able to safely use the controls within the driving cab the following requirements are necessary:
The maximum height for a Southern Driver is 6 feet 4 inches and the minimum height is 5 feet 2 inches. Should you be at either end of this range the recommendation is that you contact the Operational Safety Department to seek advice prior to commencing the recruitment process -
